Welcome to Owerri

THE LOC INVITES YOU!!!

On behalf of the President of the Nigerian Academy of Neurological Surgeons (NANS), we welcome you to the 12th NANS Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Scientific Conference (SC) scheduled to hold at Swiss International Beland Hotel, Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria, from November 30 to December 2, 2022.

The venue is a comfortable and convenient location and well suited to our purpose. We are happy to be your host for the 2022 NANS AGM/SC with the Theme: Evolving Subspecialties of Neurosurgery in Nigeria.  The scientific program promises an exciting mix of latest innovations in our field along with a new look at existing knowledge across a wide spectrum of neurosurgery.

A significant function of the conference is to provide a platform for us to showcase the state of our practice and encourage introspection and reflection.

We therefore look forward to a large number of abstracts from both our Neurosurgeons and Senior Registrars (SRs) in training. We hope that the strong participation of our SRs in particular will strengthens local academia and set them on the correct course for the future.

And to this end, we will be hosting two outstanding visitors from outside these shores, both of whom have distinguished themselves in their local arenas and internationally as well. We hope that their presence at the 2022 NANS AGM/SC will inspire our neurosurgeons and the SRs for a more rewarding career in Neurosurgery.

Professor Atul Goel is Professor and Head of Department of Neurosurgery, KEM Hospital and Seth G.S. Medical College, Parel, Mumbai, India, and has diverse interests across the breadth of neurosurgical practice. He has published 280 articles in peer-reviewed journals and co-authored the book, Neurosurgery of Complex Tumours and Vascular Lesions. He has been described as a Neurosurgical Genius, an Innovator and Scientist, a Philosopher, a Neurosurgeon Artist, a Teacher, a Writer and Orator.  Much of the pathology and conditions seen in India parallel those here in Nigeria, and it will be interesting to hear from him as he discusses topics in the realms of skull base, spine and cerebrovascular surgery.

Prof Stephen B Lewis is currently Director of Perth Neurosurgery, a private neurosurgical practice specializing in cerebrovascular neurosurgery, skull base and brain tumour neurosurgery, complex lumbar and cervical spine and general neurosurgical disorders.

He has a national neurosurgical reputation in the United States (where he left his position as the James and Newton Eblen Chair in Cerebrovascular Surgery and Associate Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Florida to return to his home town of Perth) and an international reputation as an accomplished neurosurgeon.

He has authored over 70 scientific articles and presented his research findings at multiple national and international scientific meetings. He has co-directed 15 surgical anatomy and surgical skill courses with Professor Rhoton, educating more than 500 participants worldwide. He will be sharing with us his extensive experience in complex skull base surgical approaches and craniotomies for brain tumour and cerebrovascular surgery.

We are looking forward to welcoming you in Owerri, the Eastern Heartland, the entertainment capital of Nigeria. Join us in having a great educational experience and build up lasting relationships with colleagues and faculty.

Warmest regards.
