The Journey

How It All Started

Founded in 2006, the Nigerian Academy of Neurological Surgeons is the first educational and scientific solely committed on the advancement of Neurosurgery in Nigeria.

From very humble beginnings the academy has grown to involve practicing neurosurgeons in Nigeria and also Nigerian neurosurgeons in diaspora.

Membership on NANS is only awarded to fully qualified and certified Neurosurgeons from the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) or the West African College of Surgeons (WACS) or similar colleges outside the country.

Associate membership is open to qualified doctors who are already in a recognized training position for Neurosurgery.

Neurosurgery is the medical subspecialty that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of disorders that affect the nervous system including the brain, spinal cord, spinal column, and peripheral nerves.

At this meeting interim officers were appointed to steer the group in its formative stages and ensure its affiliation with the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS).
